Sarcoidosis or "sarcoid" is an inflammatory disease affecting any organ or system in the body. It is typically targeted to the lungs, lymph nodes, skin, liver, eyes, heart and brain. A patient with this disease develops small, abnormal masses of cells or tissues called "granulomas" in the affected part of the body.

What is the cause of sarcoid?

I do not know the cause of this disease yet. Currently, bacteria, viruses (like Epstein Barr) or environmental stimulants are thought to cause autoimmune reactions by the body.

What is sarcoid symptoms?

Symptoms vary depending on where the illness was attacked in where in the body. For example:

  • Lung - cough, chest pain or shortness of breath
  • Lymph node - swollen soft lymph glands in the throat, armpit or inguinal region
  • Liver - Liver expansion, nausea, malaise, anorexia and weight loss
  • Skin - rash or small, bulging raised to the skin
  • Eyes - Tearing eyes and blurring vision
  • Heart - chest pain, pain, congestive heart failure
  • Bone - pain and joint swelling, especially swelling of the hands and feet.
How long will the disease last?

In some people, the disease may be remissionable within a few months. In others, it may persist for months or years, or it may be progressive.

Who eats sarcoid?

It is most common among adults aged 20-40, especially women of African American or Scandinavian type.

How is sarcoid diagnosed?

The disease is diagnosed from a blood test that measures the level of an enzyme called angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) in the blood. This enzyme is elevated in the majority of sarcoid patients. X-rays of diseased tissue and biopsy can be used to confirm diagnosis.

What is standard medical sarcoidosis treatment?

Most doctors prescribe corticosteroids to treat diseases. Steroids reduce inflammation and alleviate symptoms, but do not cure sarcoid. Drugs used for sarcoidosis treatment can also cause serious long-term side effects such as osteoporosis, liver damage, decreased immunity, and increased cancer risk.
