Freelander is a 4x4 vehicle, so the type of wheel and tire you use is very important to avoid damaging the drive train.
Recommended tire size
Recommended tire size Freelander 1 (1998 - 2006) It is as follows.
- 15 inch wheel: 195/80 R15
- 16 inch wheel: 215/65 R16
- 17 inch wheel: 235/55 R 17
- 18 inch wheel: 235/50 R18
- 19 inch wheel: 245/45 R19
- 20 inch wheel: 245/40 R20
- 22 inch wheel: 295/30 R22
Although we will not encounter many freelands with 22 inch wheels!
for Freelander 2 (after 2006) Recommended tire size is as follows.
- 16 inch wheel: 215/75 R16
- 17 inch wheel: 235/65 R17
- 18 inch wheel: 235/60 R18
- 19 inch wheel: 235/55 R19
- 20 inch wheel: 275/40 R20
- 22 inch wheel: 265/35 R22
What does the tire size number mean?
Many of us are quite accustomed to order tires with that number, but I know they are important, but they do not understand everything they mean.
When taking a 16 inch wheel for Freelander 1, the tire should be as follows:
215/65 R16
The first digit 215 is the TY width (mm) from the sidewall to the sidewall when looking from the top without stress. Technical name is section width.
The second numerical value 65 is the ratio of the height of the side wall height expressed as a percentage of the width. Technical name is the aspect ratio or section height. In this case, 65% of 215 mm is 139.75 mm.
R means ty is a radial structure. This means that the cord ply is positioned 90 degrees to the direction of travel or radially (from the center of the tire).
The next figure 16 is the diameter (in inches) of the rim of the wheel designed to fit the tie. Therefore, in this case, it is a 16 inch wheel tire.
It is slightly odd that the size of the tire is mixing inches and mm, but that's the way it is.
If you look at the size printed on this number like 215/65 R16, then two numbers and a letter follow. The two numbers are the load index and the letters are the speed ratings. The load index indicates how much weight a tire can take (Freelander, the minimum load index must be 84 or 85 depending on Freelander's exact model). The speed rating is continuous for 10 hours without splitting.
Evaluation of speed is as follows.
- Speed symbol maximum speed function
- MPH Km / h
- L 120 75 75
- M 130 81 81
- N 140 87
- P 150 95
- Q 160 100
- R 170 105
- S180 113 113
- T 190 118 118
- U 200 125
- H 210 130
- V 240 150
- W 270 168
- Y 300 186
- Z 240+ 150+
Can you use tires of different sizes from those recommended for your freelancer?
The speedometer will not be read slowly and accurately if the full circumference of the wheel of the attached tire is within plus or minus 2.5% of the recommended value, but there is no problem with the fitting with a different size from Freelander. The whole circumference is calculated from the total diameter.
If the whole circumference exceeds plus or minus 2.5%, there is a danger of damage to the drive train.
Using the most common free-runer sizes, there are several different sizes you can use:
Replacement products for 195/80 R15 are as follows.
- 205/75 R15 (difference of circumference of -0.87%)
- 215/70 R15 (difference of -1.70% of circumference)
- 215/75 R15 (difference of circumference of + 1.47%)
- 225/70 R15 (circumference difference + 0.32%)
- 235/70 R15 (difference of circumference of + 2.34%)
Replacement for 215/65 R16 is as follows.
- 225/65 R16 (difference of + 1.76% of circumference)
- 225/60 R16 (-1.44% difference of circumference)
- 235/60 R16 (difference of circumference of + 0.28%)
- 255/55 R16 (difference in circumference is 0%)
Replacement products for 215/75 R16 are as follows.
- 225/70 R16 (difference of circumference of -0.83%)
- 225/75 R16 (difference of circumference of + 2.19%)
- 235/65 R16 (circumference difference -2.19%)
- 235/70 R16 (difference of circumference of + 1.09%)
- 255/65 R16 (difference of circumference of + 1.36%)
Substitutes for 235/65 R17 are as follows.
- 245/65 R17 (+ 1.64% circumference)
- 255/60 R17 (difference of circumference is 0%)
- 265/60 R17 (difference of + 1.64% of circumference)
- 275/55 R17 (difference of -1.52% of circumference)
If there is a difference in the circumference, remember that the reading of the speedometer is a bit wrong.

How much tire should I replace with Freelander?
Freelander recommends that you replace four tires of the same manufacturer, model, type at the same time so as not to damage the drive train.
The 4 × 4 system of Freelander 1 is very sensitive to the difference in the rolling radius of the tire, if it differs by more than 5 mm there is a risk of damaging the drive train, especially the rear differential.
Confirm that your tire is not winding up your viscous coupling unit (VCU) - It is a bulbous part at the center of the propeller shaft and runs from the front to the rear of Freelander 1 - It is a hub that sends a drive to the rear wheels Please run the freelander about 5 to 10 miles and check the temperature of the VCU. Carefully, the VCU can get very hot! If VCC is too comfortable to grab hands, there is a problem with the tires. We need to consider exchanging immediately. Otherwise, there is a very large invoice on the item in the drive train.
Just by exchanging two tires with Freelander 1, make sure that the new tire is in the rear (the same model, model, type as the former), check the temperature of VCU as above and heat do not do. Please do not exchange only one tire with freelander.
Technical details of freelander tires and wheels
For those who like a little more technical details on your Freelander tires and wheels, there is more information.
Freelander 1:
- PCD 5 x 114
- Offset 35 - 45
- Bore 64.1
- Fitting N 12 x 1.5
Freelander 2:
- PCD 5 x 108
- Offset 35 to 50
- Bore 63.4
- Fitting N 14 x 1.5
If you do not understand what these mean, we will briefly explain here.
PCD is pitch circle diameter. This is the diameter (mm) of the circle drawn through the bolt hole of the wheel. It also shows the number of studs and bolts the wheel has. Freelander 1 has five bolts, and the diameter of the circle drawn in the bolt hole is 114 mm. Freelander 2 has 5 bolts and a diameter of 108 mm.
The offset is the position where the wheel sits against the body line of the car body. Offsets are usually typed in the wheel and measured in millimeters (et is an abbreviation for the German word "Einpresstiefe" and is interpreted literally as the insertion depth). The number is essentially the distance between the center of the wheel and the hub.
The center hole of the wheel is the center that fits the hub. The measured value of the bore is the diameter (mm) of the central bore.
Fitting is a necessary wheel nut and bolt.
