Defects in the neural tube are the biggest defects occurring in the early stages of pregnancy, since it is the time of development of the brain and spinal cord. These defects can be detected by prenatal testing including ultrasound scan and blood test. Neural tube defects occur when the spinal cord or skull does not properly close during development of the fetus.

The most common neural tube defect is the spina bifida spine where the spine is divided or divided. A baby born at spina bifida spinal lesion damaged the spine and exposed nerve. This defect is the most common congenital anomaly seen in the United States. Spinal bifid spinal vertebrae cause permanent damage including paralysis, incontinence, loss of movement and loss of sensation.

Defects in the neural tube are water soluble vitamin B and can be avoided with folic acid available in tablet form. Folic acid, also known as folate, is used in the body for cell proliferation and regeneration, and it is necessary for pregnant women to do so. Folic acid is known to prevent nerve tube defects and to reduce the risk of preterm birth and low birth weight infants.

A pregnant woman needs 0.6 mg of folic acid every day, and can eat food rich in folic acid. Women planning to become pregnant are advised to begin taking intake for one month before pregnancy and during the first 3 months of pregnancy to avoid defects in the neural tube.

The natural sources of folic acid are as follows:

o Lush vegetables like spinach
o Broccoli and Brussels bud
orange
banana
o Avocado
grapefruit
o egg
o Yeast extract
o Enriched food like cereals
O Berry

If you are planning pregnancy, please consult your doctor or health professional about folate intake. Women of reproductive age are advised to increase the intake of folic acid, especially when planning pregnancy.
