Advantages and disadvantages of main types of bicycle racks -2

There are three main types of motorcycle carriers. Hitch mount, strap on, roof mount. Each has advantages and disadvantages.

Hitch mount rack

These are attached to the hitch behind the car. There are two types.

• Class I carriers are compatible with numerous cars and small sports utility vehicles (SUV). Depending on the design, you can carry up to three bicycles.

• Class III carriers are designed to be used in pickups and large SUVs. You can hold more bicycles than class I racks. Unfortunately, it can not be used for small vehicles without expensive remodeling.

These carriers are very easy to install and are generally less likely to accidentally hurt the paint from the vehicle while installing the bike.

However, without proper installation, it is possible to close the rear window, which increases the possibility of causing an accident at the time of reverse rotation. You can also cover the license plate, but this is illegal in many countries.

Strap on trunk mount rack

These carriers have straps in the trunk, rear bumper or hatchback, carrying up to 3 bicycles. They come with a padded or plastic coated frame support to protect the bicycle from scratches and other damage.

The strap stored in the rack can be cheap and easily stored when not in use. They are versatile and can be used in virtually any model and are particularly suitable for leased vehicles.

Unfortunately, like a hitch-mounted rack, you may occasionally close the rear window if it is not fully installed. Also, the thief can also fix the attached bicycle rack to the vehicle with a strap.

Covered rack

These are attached to the upper door frame of the vehicle, rain gutters, or generally inexpensive cross bars and roof racks. Depending on the size of the vehicle, you can carry up to 7 bicycles. If extra storage space for tools and other equipment is required, special case can be added. When not used to hold a motorcycle, it can also be used to carry canoes and skis.

A rack attached to the roof guarantees unobstructed view from the rear window, but it is more difficult to install. Another disadvantage is increased air resistance, which leads to increased fuel consumption and wind noise, and increased potential for paint scratches as the bicycle is lifted onto the roof of the car.

By understanding the strengths and weaknesses of the major types of bike racks on the market, you can easily grasp which one you choose.
