Causes of sciatica are varied and unfortunately in many cases the cause of sciatica can not be determined. It is believed that general wear and tear of the body results in sciatica pain and can usually be treated in several forms of treatment of sciatica. Sciatica is caused by injury or compression of the sciatic nerve.
Cause of sciatica
Sciatica begins when the main nerve of the sciatic nerve is stimulated, pinched or squeezed in some way. This can happen for one or more of several reasons. The following are the main causes of sciatica:
- Stress fractures in the fifth lumbar vertebrae known as Isthmic Spondylolisthesis - L5 can cause disc motion and thus sciatic nerve symptoms.
- Piriformis syndrome - Piriformis muscles are in the lumbar area and can cause convulsions and cause symptoms of sciatica.
- Degenerative Disc Disease - Your spine disc will become obsolete like you and the rest of the body may wear out. This is just another way of saying that your intervertebral disc is aging.
- Lumbar spinal canal stenosis - Various roots of the sciatic nerve pass through the spinal cord. One of these pathways may become small as a result of stenosis, irritation or compression on the nerve.
- Lumbar disc herniation - The intervertebral disc of the spine is like a shock absorber, it can bend and turn the back. Aging can weaken or damage these intervertebral discs, the intervertebral discs may swell, divide, and squeeze the sciatic nerve. This is one of the most common causes of sciatica.
- Trauma - Accidents that cause sudden compression of the sciatic nerve can cause major pain, such as breaking the bones that pressure the nerve.
- Tumor - It may irritate or compress the sciatic nerve or cause sciatica. However, this is hardly considered as one of the causes.
- Pregnancy - To carry a baby, there is an extra burden on the spine, causing sciatica.
